This recipe is the brainchild of our head roaster whose holiday season would be incomplete without Great Grandma Beidelman's famous Pfeffernüsse cookies. Pfeffernüsse is a German holiday cookie meaning 'pepper nut' and is composed of a melody of warming baking spices called lebkuchengewürz. Each holiday season we make our spice blend from scratch and use it for baking and brewing. The beauty of this recipe is its versatility. It's a fantastic way to liven up a batch brew of drip coffee around the holiday season (simply add to your grind basket enough to suit your taste) and to use as an elegant dusting over a fine mocha or hot cocoa.

Fun facts: The Joy of Cooking claims that “snickerdoodle” comes from “Schneckennudel,” a German word that literally means “snail noodles.” Other claims are from the German word shneckennudel (which is a kind of cinnamon bun). Others trace its origin to New England's tradition of whimsical cookie names. The film The Holiday was written specifically with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black in mind, so the writers played to the actors' and actresses' strengths in the script.

Steep Brewing & Coffee Company - Keystone, Colorado
They have not been on a Caffeine Crawl yet, but Jason discovered this business by visiting them nearly everyday on vacation in Colorado. A must visit if you find yourself in Summit County, Colorado.

The famous caramel apple was created by Kraft Foods employee Dan Walker by accident. Supposedly he was experimenting with leftover Halloween inventory, melting the caramels together and incorporating different fruits.

They have been featured in several food and beverage national sources, and claimed awards from the likes of Good Food Awards. Their roastery and coffee shop also houses a cupping and teaching space located in Dallas’ Expo Park neighborhood.
Fun facts: Husband and wife team, Kevin and Marta Sprague, walked away from the corporate world and started their company in 2011. The Dallas Arts District is the largest urban arts district in the United States. The frozen margarita machine was invented in Dallas by restauranteur Mariano Martinez. The history of orange chocolate goes back much further to ancient China, where people would dip orange segments in chocolate and give them to their lovers. From there, chocolate oranges travelled across established trade routes heading west. By 1400 it found its way to Sicily. From there, it slowly trickled through the dessert world till it hit us in the post World War 1 era.

They have not been on a Caffeine Crawl yet, but we host a Crawl in NW Arkansas almost every year. Little Rock would be a great winter Here & There event in the near future. Jason visited to space coming back from a Memphis trip a few years ago.
Fun facts: British bartending guru Dick Bradsell is credited with revolutionizing the cocktail scene in London in the 1980s and creating the Espresso Martini cocktail. The story goes, a young model, who Bradsell claims is now world famous, sidled up to the bar and asked for something to “wake me up and f**k me up” at Fred’s Club in the late 1980s. His solution was a combination of vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur and sugar, shaken into a frothy mix of bittersweet addiction. Originally called The Vodka Espresso then the Pharmaceutical Stimulant. Nexus started in a 115 year old building as a shop. Four years later, in 2021, they expanded from 1,600-square-foot and took over an adjoining corner space reaching 4,000-square-foot. This allowed them to start roasting and add a performance space.

Fun facts: Jason Burton, owner of Caffeine Crawl, started LAB 5702 as a business in 2009. It started as an alias name he used for beverage articles he wrote for publications, and created an underground drink club in Kansas City. In the early years of LAB 5702, later becoming The LAB, beverage companies hired Jason to create cocktails and mocktails. This included the book "Sloshies: 102 Boozy Cocktails Straight from the Freezer" that he worked on with Jerry Nevins. The inspiration for this drink, which is mentioned briefly in the video, comes from his love and daydreams of being in the woods. Noah Kahan's song Stick Season was the audio inspiration. A “stick season” is a specific term native to Vermonters, referring to the period of time between Halloween and the first snow. Known to be a depressing time, Jason finds it to be peaceful, and thus the sounds and smells of hockey during "stick season" feels like a better take on the time period.
